Ngamiland– MMG Khoemacau Copper Mining is excited to announce the return of the Lake Ngami GM’s Cycle Classic. Absa Bank Botswana as the main sponsor, for the third year running continues to show its commitment and contribution to the Toteng community through such initiatives.  The event is scheduled for the 20th October 2024, which will bring together cycling enthusiasts, community members and sponsors under the empowering theme #CyclingForProgress. This year’s event introduces an improved prize matrix, adding an extra layer of excitement for participants. The annual cycle challenge not only offers thrilling competition but also underscores MMG Khoemacau’s commitment to driving sustainable development in Ngamiland.

The Cycle Classic has grown significantly since its inception, with participation rising each year. This year, the event will welcome 300 cyclists, an increase from last year’s 250, demonstrating the growing enthusiasm and support for the cause. Cyclists of all skill levels are invited to partake in this journey through the breathtaking landscapes of Ngamiland, with a carefully designed route that promises to challenge even the most seasoned riders while also accommodating newcomers to the sport.

Mr. Boikobo Paya, Director of MMG Khoemacau Copper Mining, spoke passionately about the upcoming event. He said, “The Lake Ngami GM’s Cycle Classic has evolved into more than just a sporting event. It is a testament to our commitment to community development and progress. Through the theme #CyclingForProgress, we want to emphasize the important role that collective efforts play in transforming communities for the better. Every pedal turned during this event is a step forward in ensuring a brighter future for Ngamiland.”

He further stated, “Our goal is to encourage healthy lifestyles, unity and a sense of shared responsibility among all who participate. The overwhelming response from cyclists, sponsors and the broader public is evidence of the strength of our shared vision to uplift the communities that surround us.”

The funds from this year’s Lake Ngami GM’s Cycle Classic will support community initiatives, including education, infrastructure development and programs that uplift local livelihoods. As we enter the third year, we aim to grow the event in line with Khoemacau’s values and the mission of mining for progress. With planned initiatives to enhance the learning environment at Ngami JSS, we are building a lasting legacy in the region. The 2024 edition seeks to build on past successes, expanding the scope of supported projects for greater long-term benefits.

Over the past two years, the Cycle Classic has had a tangible impact on the region, with funds supporting key projects such as the refurbishment of schools, access to clean water and infrastructural improvements that have enhanced the daily lives of many in the local communities. The 2024 edition aims to build on these successes, with plans to expand the scope of supported projects even further.

In addition to the cycling challenge, the day will feature a 10 km run/ walk, range of activities for spectators and supporters, including a community market, local entertainment and family-friendly events. This inclusive approach ensures that even those who are not cycling can still contribute and enjoy a day dedicated to making a positive difference.

MMG Khoemacau Copper Mining is also grateful for the support of numerous sponsors and partners whose contributions have been instrumental in the success of the event. Their dedication to corporate social responsibility and community development continues to play a critical role in the impact made through the Lake Ngami GM’s Cycle Classic.

“We are proud to partner with such a wide network of sponsors and stakeholders who share our vision for progress,” said Mr. Paya. “Their involvement ensures that we can continue to grow the event each year, making an even greater contribution to the communities we serve.”

The 3rd Annual Lake Ngami GM’s Cycle Classic is poised to be an exciting, meaningful event where sport meets purpose.
