Mababe Bridge Reopens for Limited Traffic After Heavy Rains

North West District authorities have confirmed that the Mababe Bridge has been reopened after recent downpours that were feared to have destabilized the structure.

The Mababe Bridge has long been an essential artery for transportation in the tourism route, connecting communities and facilitating the tourism trade.

However, the recent torrential rains have posed serious challenges for this crucial structure, leading to its temporary closure by the Botswana Roads Department. The heavy downpours swept away significant portions of the soil supporting the bridge, prompting concerns over the integrity and safety of the crossing.

North West District Council Chairman Itumeleng Kelebetseng yesterday confirmed that upon the bridge’s closure, engineers began an expedited assessment of its structural integrity and concluded that it was safe for use. ‘’Their careful approach has allowed for the safe reopening of the bridge, and they will continue to monitor the situation, ensuring that any further work will maintain the safety of all users’’ Kelebetseng noted.

Kelebetseng further added that while the reopening of the Mababe Bridge is a welcomed relief for many who rely on it for travel and transport, the department has reiterated that they will implement a 10-tonne weight restriction.

The chairman alluded that it is crucial for drivers to understand and comply with the new regulations to ensure the ongoing safety of the bridge.

For those operating heavier vehicles, alternative routes may need to be considered until assessments allow for more inclusive traffic once again.
